Dynamic DNA Labs: Genetics of High Cholesterol

At Dynamic DNA Labs, we utilize genetic analysis to determine how a person will react to different medications. Known as Personalized Medicine, this DNA testing virtually eliminates the possibility of adverse drug reactions.

One of the panels we offer is cardiovascular health panel. In the world of cardiovascular health, genetics play a large role. In today’s blog, the experts at Dynamic DNA Labs take a closer look at the genetics of high cholesterol.

When It’s In Your Genes

Nearly 1 in 3 adults has high cholesterol. Only 1 in 300 people have familial hypercholesterolemia. Anyone who has one of the 1,500 possible gene variants that cause the condition has a 50 percent chance of passing that gene on to their children.

How is FH Diagnosed?

For the majority of people, there are no symptoms until they have a heart attack. Patients may have bumps (deposits of cholesterol) around the eyes or bumps on the tendons, but many patients don’t. The main symptoms are high cholesterol levels and a family history of high cholesterol.

How is FH Treated?

A heart-healthy lifestyle is certainly encouraged. This includes exercise, low-fat diet, and not smoking. Inherited high cholesterol, however, often starts at birth, and a statin medication will often need to be a cornerstone of the treatment, along with the above-mentioned lifestyle choices.

Consequences of Not Seeking Treatment

The lifetime risk of a cardiovascular event, such a heart attack or stroke, is 20 times greater for someone with FH. For women in the age group of 20 to 39, there is 125 times greater risk. Men tend to have cardiovascular events 10 years earlier, in their 30s and 40s, and women in their 50s and 60s.
