DNA Testing: Food Sensitivities

DNA Testing: Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities can cause a much lower quality of life if you’re unaware of them. You may feel sick often and not even know that it’s because of your sensitivity to gluten or lactose. Food sensitivities aren’t always easy to diagnose, but luckily that isn’t the case when you choose Dynamic DNA Labs. We offer DNA testing to help you figure out what foods you should be avoiding. Today in the Dynamic DNA Labs blog, we’ll be discussing some of the common food sensitivities that can be found through DNA testing.

Food Sensitivities

There are a number of food sensitivities our DNA testing can find. These include caffeine metabolism, gluten sensitivity, lactose intolerance, alcohol flushing, and peanut allergies. Let’s talk a little more about each of them.

Caffeine Metabolism

Caffeine metabolism measures how sensitive your body is to caffeine, and how it processes it. The enzyme that your liver produces to metabolize coffee is called the CYP1A2 gene. Depending on your DNA, you may not produce this gene as efficiently as some others might. Through testing we can find out your sensitivity level, as being hypersensitive can cause you jitters with just one cup of coffee.

Gluten Sensitivity

You don’t have to have celiac disease to be sensitive to gluten. Your body may be able to tolerate it, to a degree, but you may still be having problems. With DNA testing, we can find out the issues beyond celiac disease. That way you know if you’re feeling bad because of gluten, or if it’s because of something else. Diagnosing gluten sensitivity will ensure you don’t have to keep guessing as to what foods are causing you problems.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance is when your body can’t digest the sugars, or lactose, found in dairy. Being lactose intolerant can cause quite a bit of discomfort. With DNA testing, we can find out whether or not your body can handle dairy.

Alcohol Flushing

Alcohol flushing is when someone has blotches or red skin rashes after consuming alcohol. It’s caused by a deficiency of a certain enzyme. Individuals with alcohol flushing can be prone to esophageal cancer if they drink too much. Having this diagnosis is important because it can prevent you from having more serious health issues down the line.

Peanut Allergy

Peanut allergies are fairly self-explanatory, but they’re incredibly dangerous. Finding out your level of peanut allergy will ensure you’re safe from having severe reactions. For instance, some people who are highly allergic to peanuts can have a reaction from being in a restaurant that cooks with them. DNA testing determines how severe your peanut allergies are.
